Urban Weatherization Initiative (UWI)

The Urban Weatherization Initiative (UWI) program is administered by the Office of Urban Assistance in the Illinois Department of Commerce.  It has the distinction of being the first state-funded weatherization program in the country.  UWI provides training, jobs and weatherization services for economically-distressed communities and under/unemployed individuals. 

  • Creates jobs and increase skills and career opportunities for the under/unemployed (home energy auditors and weatherization specialists);
  • Improves energy efficiency and reduce energy costs in disadvantaged communities; and
  • Stimulates local economies buy purchasing supplies from local distributors and manufacturers. 

Urban communities in the following counties are eligible:

  • Alexander
  • Kane
  • Lake
  • Macon
  • Peoria
  • St. Clair
  • Will
  • Cook
  • Kankakee
  • LaSalle
  • Madison
  • Rock Island
  • Stephenson
  • Winnebago
