Climate Works Pre-apprenticeship Program

About the program

The Climate Works Pre-apprenticeship Program will provide training to prepare people to succeed in apprenticeship programs in construction and building trades that are expected to see clean energy job growth. The goal is to create a qualified, diverse pipeline of clean energy workers.

The program will be offered in three regional centers in Illinois. $10 million per year will be allocated for the program, with an additional $6 million per year for distribution of Energy Transition Barrier Reduction Program services and funds.

Program location

The three Climate Works Pre-apprenticeship centers will locate in Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) Region 1, IDOT Regions 2 and 3, and IDOT Regions 4 and 5. See the IDOT region map. The centers will serve people throughout these regions.

Who can participate?

Pre-apprenticeship centers will enroll equity-eligible individuals, defined as individuals from equity investment eligible communities (see map), as well as individuals who face barriers to employment, including those who are formerly incarcerated or graduates or current members of the foster care system.

What will be taught?

Implement a construction + clean energy basics curriculum to provide training, certification preparation, job readiness, and skill development, including soft skills, math skills, technical skills, certification test preparation, and other development needed to program participants.  The program will facilitate enrollment in apprenticeship programs after completion.
