The Illinois Tech Reuse Network partners with four different organizations, and the specific technology accepted by each varies. In general, participating organizations accept laptops, tablets, desktop PCs, monitors, servers, networking hardware, phones, cables & accessories, circuit boards/cards, mice, hard drives, keyboards, and more. The most in-demand type of equipment is laptops. Based on equipment available for donation, the IOB will route your donation accordingly.
Illinois Tech Reuse Network
The Illinois Tech Reuse Network facilitates the collection of retired computers, laptops, and other devices, refurbishes them, and then distributes them for free or a low cost to households in need of technology.
How it Works:
- A business, organization, or individual has desktops, laptops, tablets, monitors, cell phones, computer parts, routers, or other technology that is no longer being used.
- Prospective donor completes this form with information about available equipment, such as type, quantity, and location.
- When a donor has 15 or more devices to donate, the Illinois Office of Broadband (IOB) will facilitate a connection between the donor and a partner device refurbishing organization to schedule a pickup.
- If a donor has fewer than 15 devices, the IOB will share opportunities to drop off or ship donations.
- All donated devices will then be refurbished and provided to a household in need for free or low-cost. If a device cannot be refurbished, it is responsibly recycled.
Why Donate?
- More than 20% of Illinoisans do not have a computer at home -- help close the device gap.
- Reduce waste by reusing and recycling.
- Increase digital access and opportunities for fellow Illinoisans to close the digital divide.
How to Donate:
To start a donation, complete this online form. This information will help the IOB facilitate your donation.

All data-bearing devices are put through a commercial data erasure process to ensure that all data is destroyed. Any hardware that cannot be wiped is physically shredded.
All devices which are donated to Compudopt are accessed only by authorized staff members and data bearing devices are wiped using industrial grade disk sanitization software. Compudopt follows National Institute for Standards and Technology NIST 800-88 PURGE guidelines for data destruction on all devices.
Human I-T has a certificate of destruction to ensure that your devices are certifiably wiped of any data. Using a NIST 800-88 method, random data is written through the entirety of the device with data storage in order to destroy all recoverable data on the device. The device with data storage is then re-scanned to verify that 100% of all sensitive information has been destroyed. If Human I-T cannot erase all sensitive data using their software, the device with data storage will be physically destroyed and recycled in an environmentally sound manner, via an R2-certified organization.
PCs for People is AAA Certified by the National Association of Information Destruction and provides data sanitization for every device using Department of Defense, HIPAA, and NIST 800-88 compliant software. A certificate of data sanitization is available upon request.
PowerUp Project uses a DBAN, a hard drive erasure & data utility cleaner that they use to clean all computers. They physically remove the storage drive from the computer onsite for you to keep.
By donating used electronic devices, organizations increase their lifespan, reducing pollutants and emissions created while manufacturing new products and keeping them out of landfills longer (EPA). It is estimated that between 2021-2030, a total of 2.5 to 3.7 billion tons of CO2 could be saved from recycling e-waste.*

The Illinois Tech Reuse Network is an on-going opportunity. Please compete the form when the devices are available.
